How can I REGISTER TO PaRTICIPATE ?

Registration is easy! Click on the Sleep Out tab and fill in the request box. A GASO Staff member will give you a call during business hours.

When can I pick a sleep out day?

You can pick your "Sleep Out" date anytime of the year, starting 02-20-20. The Great American Sleep Out is schedule everyday in 2020.

Is there a participation fee?


Yes, the participation fee is $35 and is due when you register.  This fee covers the cost of your administrative paperwork and T-Shirt.

where can i sleep? 

This campaign is extreme, you get to pick where you would like to sleep, as long as it is not in the comfort of your house or the warmth of your bed. For example, you can sleep at Jars of Clay, in your driveway, back yard, your church, etc., you just have to sleep outside safely.

what can I sleep in during the "sleep out?"

You can sleep in your car, a tent, a cardboard box, a sleeping bag, or you can get creative, but you must sleep outside under the stars.  This will give you a glimpse of what a homeless teen is faced with everyday.

what time is the sleep out?

6pm to 6am

Are the hours of the Great American "Sleep Out." You can pick the day and date of your "Sleep Out" but the corporate hours must remain the same.

How do I fundraise? 

Tell everyone in your social circle that you are a Great American Sleep Out Participant and you are raising essential funds to bring a homeless teen inside, while you sleep outside. Have them visit this site (www.greatamericansleepout.org) and find your picture under the Participants Spotlight to make a donation to your campaign.  If they can not find your picture, they can click the donate tab and make a secure donation in your name! That simple.

why do I use social media during my sleep out?

We really, really, really want you to video your experience. If you are not on social media then you can simply record your experience in 20-30 seconds. send up the clips so we can show the world how important this cause is.  


If you are on social media you can help us bring more social awareness to the problem and who knows, someone may see your video and be encouraged to participate!

Can I donate and not sleep out?

YES, YES, YES

Some people may not be able to participate because of a medical condition or oher factors, by making a donation, you PARTICIPATED to help us save homeless teenagers from the street.  Click on the donate button and donate to the cause. All donations are tax deductible.


can I leave to use the bathroom? 

YES, YES, YES

Using the bathroom is a luxury, as many teens that sleep outside can not use a healthy facility. during this Sleep Out" you may use the bathroom...and don't take all day!

Can I watch movies on my phone?


Remember the "Sleep Out" is purposed to give you a tiny glimpse of the life of a homeless person. Many teens do not have the luxury of charging their phones until they make it to a power source, a restaurant or library. 

can I split my hours with a friend?

YES, YES, YES

Any person can "cover," "switch out" or "trade places," with you as long as they are A REGISTERED  Sleep Out Participant.  A Registered participant must pay $35 and upload a picture and agree to the terms of the Great American Sleep Out.

is there a great american sleep out I can join?

What should I bring to the sleep out?


You should bring one sleeping bag, a trash bag, layers of clothes, basic toiletries, personal medication (if necessary), your phone (make sure your phone is fully charged), light snacks and beverage, JOY and an open HEART.

Can I eat during the sleep out? 

 YES, YES, YES

Remember the "Sleep Out" is purposed to give you a tiny glimpse of the life of a homeless person. Many teens do not have the luxury of the choice of a meal. But food is permitted during the "Sleep Out."



How many people can sleep in my group? 

THE BIGGER THE BETTER

During your Sleep Out you may sleep as an individual or as a group. Many people have social groups, church groups, reading groups and the like, they are permitted to join your group sleep Out, they must register in your group. A REGISTERED  Sleep Out Participant  must pay $35 and upload a picture and agree to the terms of the Great American Sleep Out, and state they are on your team.

can children participate in the sleep out? 

 YES, YES, YES

Children are powerful and great Activist too! The Great American Sleep Out" is purposed to give you a tiny glimpse of the life of a homeless teenager, we feel children will respond in a sensitive and compassionate way. Additionally, they can appreciate their parents support and bed.  Children under 12 are free, but must be registered under their parent. Children ages 13-18 are required to pay $25, all proceeds support the Sleep Out. 

What happens if it rains during the sleep out? 


Remember the "Sleep Out" is purposed to give you a tiny glimpse of the life of a homeless person they don't have control of the weather either, but have to sleep outside.  We are asking you to sleep from 6pm to 6am RAIN OR SHINE to show solidarity to homeless teenagers.
